Karen K. Kosasa and Stan Tomita
Colonial Crimes: Settlers in Hawai•i, 2006 Whose Paradise?, 2001, 2006
Karen Kosasa and Stan Tomita, both educators at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, have been working together for nearly 10 years. Sharply addressing issues of ownership and popular/public perception in and of the Aloha State, "Colonial Crimes: Settlers in Hawai'i" (2006) was created specifically for this show. Portraying themselves and each other through life-size prints they ask us "Whose
Paradise?" through the default medium of the Hawaiian hospitality industry: the post card. Dressed blandly if not anonymously in their images, they also ask us, what do locals see? And how are locals seenÄparticularly, when they can't see themselves?
