Jessica Oshita
From the King Street series, 2004
Jess Oshita "discovered" the beauty of King Street when she was forced to walk its length on her way to school at UH during the bus strike of 2003. By omitting the people and allowing the textures and forms of the city to speak for themselves, she captures these portraits of Honolulu in quiet, pensive, almost introspective moods. We are invited to consider a different kind of beauty as the familiar views of rusting pipes, cracked glass windows, and the back sides of air conditioners are captured during interactions with some of the purest elements metropolitan Hawaii has to offer: erosion caused by weather, and that caused by time passing through the gaps in our attention spans.
