Chad Hiyakumoto and Darin Lee, Aala Park Boardshop (APB)
Lowercase, 2003
Permanently grounded in the culture of skateboarding, A'ala Park Boardshopęs (APB) "Lowercase" simultaneously represents the local skateboarders of Hawaii, preserves their transient physical accomplishments and successfully aestheticizes it. We see the skater's perspective, from the skatepark Hiyakumoto helped design in collaboration with Honolulu city planners (he studied civil engineering at UH) through the city's alleys and monuments alike, to the concrete stretches of the Blaisdell Center. The video complements Kyle Collins' freeze frames, providing viewers with the "missing pieces of the puzzle," using humor, music, the casual drama of surf footage and attitude to present the entire scope of the skating gesture from setup, to execution, to success and failure.
