George Lee is the photo editor and a photographer for one of Hawaii's biggest news organs, the Star Bulletin, which reaches a daily audience numbered in the tens of thousands. In that position Lee literally shapes the way that the general public in Hawaii sees itself. One need only consider the local and global effects of an image featuring a roaring jet of raw sewage going into the Ala Wai to understand the careful balancing act and critical function that Lee performs. The photographs that accompany the headlines and lead stories are carefully selected windows that he opens and directs our gaze through. We are then free to dive deeper into the story or summarize it based on the impact of the image itself. |
