Erika Johnson
Open Range, 2006
Erika Johnson is a native of Montana's "Big Sky" country, a place
that is analogous to Hawaii in terms of its country lifestyles and
mana-filled landscapes. Imagine her shock when she moved to the island to
attend UH and was not presented with paradise, but confronted with
traffic jams, car exhaust, steel, and concrete. In Johnson's work a
cow -- is it lost? Paralyzed? stunned? -- is situated in the middle
of a downtown Honolulu street. Though the cow can evoke the cherished
paniolo culture of Hawaii, here Johnson uses it to stake a claim for
and explore difference. Her work, clearly and valuably haole in
the true sense of the word, expresses the long-term Hawaii resident's
experiences with many of the typically urban problems found in the
epicenter of Hawaii's built environment.
